Decay in permanent teeth is falling among children, teens, and adults. Dental sealants—thin, plastic coatings that guard teeth from cavities—play a part in that decrease.

The number of 2- to 5-year-olds with such decay increased from 24 to 28 percent from 1988 to 2004, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
